With how popular they've become as of late (and how much I've been enjoying a particular series entrenched in this genre), I thought it'd be wise to create a thread to discuss all things visual novel. Whether it's your Ace Attorney's, your Danganronpa's or even some more obscure yet really interesting all the same ones like your Famicom Detective Club's or Zero Escape's, you're more than free to talk about all the good and bad surrounding them. I hope you all have a great time here and happy chatting!

This is a great idea. I would love to see some recommendations for older VNs.

The only modern ones that I can remember playing as of lately is Phoenix Wright. However when I was a kid my favorite game was the Carmen Sandiego series. I use to play that all the time over at my friends house and at school when I earned computer time. I am kinda surprised that they haven't made a modern version for Switch or even PC.

I have never really thought of the Ace Attorney Games as visual novels I have always considered them more like puzzle games I guess

@Tasuki I assume that was a tie-in game of sorts with the old Carmen Sandiego TV show? I know they've recently made a modern reboot of it (if my memory serves me well) but I wasn't aware there was also a game series along with it!

@kerr9000 I've always seen the series as a hybrid of visual novels and adventure games, with a little smattering of puzzle games thrown in every now and then. I honestly think that's the reason I enjoy AA so much: it takes a genre usually well known for it's lack of interactivity....and adds a lot of interactivity. Vast oversimplification I'm aware but it really does keep you engaged through the melodrama that unfolds case by case and is, to me, a core part of what makes AA so damn memorable.

Yeah I certainly think the Phoenix games are memorable, I love the characters and they keep you going even if a certain bit is annoying the fudge out of you.

@Fizza No the games came first back in the late 80s earlier 90s. Then a PBS game show, then a Fox animated show.

One thing I was thinking of recently was how well the SNES in particular would be suited to doing some cool interactive visual novel or Choose Your Own Adventure type of game in modern-retro times using either Mode 3 or Mode 4 for 256-colour images that could just look great. Indeed, the image in my signature is basically how good SNES could get these images to look, and that's before any smooth colour gradients in the background, semi-transparency, the second background layer and even any sprites are added into the mix.
